Every morning, the dog and I head out for a wander around our neighbourhood – rain, sleet, or shine, we're out. In winter I'm usually cursing under my breath that I have to go out, right enough, but ... At least I'm out. I may bitch and moan about it, but I'm out.
And so's he.
Once we’re actually out there with the howling wind slicing my face, I remember why this habit of perambulating around the neighbourhood with Roddy is worth it. It's actually quite nice noticing all the wee details that change from day to to day, and seeing who’s out and what they’re up to.
Not all of these wee details change, though.
Roddy’s a creature of habit, always stopping at the same corner to sniff the same lamp post, wagging his tail and getting all excited and aerated like it’s the first time he's ever seen it.
And every day, I think to myself, “What the hell is so fascinating about this spot? Why THIS lamp post?” In the grand scheme of city living, there are many places to sniff, but this one keeps calling him back. Every. Single. Time.
Roddy’s master plan
Eventually it dawned on me that Roddy knows exactly what he’s doing. He's got a master plan. He’s making his presence known in the most authentic way possible. (As I politely look the other way.)
Dogs have an hard-wired drive to make sure other dogs know they’ve been there. So ... Roddy shows up. Every single day. He literally NEVER walks past that lamp post without "showing up". He makes sure other dogs know he’s been there, reinforcing his presence in his little corner of the world. Leaving a lasting impression.
Roddy doesn’t walk past that lamp post and think, “Hmm, nah, can't be arsed today. Maybe tomorrow ...” No. He stops. He does his thing. He leaves an impression, literally. In your business, you want to do the same - leave a clear message about who you are, what you stand for, and why you’re worth noticing.
And isn't that exactly what we should be doing for our businesses?
Maybe not in QUITE the same way, mind you! Ha. We want our professional impression to last longer than the next shower of rain!
Instant recognition
Your audience doesn’t want generic-looking content from you. They want to see YOU: your story, your message, your values. They want to connect with the real you, not just another faceless business.
That’s where brand photography comes in.
It’s not just about pretty pictures. It’s about showing up for your brand in a genuine, authentic way, creating images that capture who you are, what you do, and how you do it, helping you show up consistently, and making people remember you.
Turns out curiosity isn't just for cats ... Roddy as a puppy was a hundred times worse than any cat! Funny moments like this, captured in a photograph, do more than make people smile, they showcase real personality. (You don't need to crawl into a washing machine though.)
Just like Roddy and his favourite lamp post, you and your business need to stand out so the right people instantly recognise you when they see you.
If your potential clients are scrolling on social media or browsing websites, they’re seeing dozens, if not hundreds, of people offering similar services to yours. If you never show your face or never give them a reason to remember you, they’ll scroll right on by, unaware of your expertise and why you could be the absolute best answer to what they need.
That’s why consistent, recognisably “you” images and content are so powerful. They help you “mark your territory” in the marketplace. People see your face, your style, and the look of your visuals, and instantly think, “Oh, that’s so-and-so, there she is, I remember her, what's she up to now?”
